What is a Facebook Page?
According to the Introduction to Social Media Marketing authored by Dr. Kelsey,
Until next time!
"A Facebook Page is a central 'hub' for a business or non-profit organization to establish a social media presence on Facebook."So what does that mean? Having a Facebook Page for your business allows you to connect with your customers on a social media platform they use. Creating Facebook Pages for businesses started as a way to show favorite brands for the every-day Facebook user to share with his or her network. But what is the real advantage of having a Facebook Page in today's day and era? Is there an advantage? We will explore these questions next.
Reasons for having a Facebook Page
Large corporations and name brands use Facebook differently than smaller businesses. A big company, such as Coca-Cola, may use Facebook Pages to maintain contact with their consumers and use crowdsourcing. Big brands know that they have to be present on all social media sites. However, this is not always a possibility for news businesses. To figure out if creating a Facebook Page is beneficial for your business, we will breakdown the potential positives that come with creating one.
According to Alyssa Gregory of The Balance Small Business, there are 10 underlying reasons why Facebook Pages are beneficial to, specifically, small businesses. These are:
- Learn About Your Target Audience
- Humanize Your Company
- Build a Community
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Stay LeveledWith Your Competition
- Get in Front of Your Clients and Customers Every Day

Why Facebook Pages Don't Work
Having already made the distinction between large brands and small businesses, this section of the post will focus on why Facebook Pages might not be the right move for smaller or new businesses. According to Elan Dekel, a contributor for Forbes, Facebook Pages might make sense for celebrities and other brands with already a large following, but it can potentially hurt newer businesses. Although his article "Facebook Pages Are a Bad Investment for Small Businesses" is dated (written in 2013), I believe the underlying issue talked about is still relevant today. I have collaborated on creating and developing several Facebook Pages where I encountered the same problem of content not being shown to your entire following.
The problem is that not all the users that like a Facebook Page are seeing all posts.
What is the Verdict?
There are strong arguments presented for each side of whether or not Facebook Pages are a good investment. I believe the best way of learning is by doing, so I have created a brand-new Facebook Page to gauge its effectiveness. With each new lesson, I will be applying the same concepts to my Facebook Page and sharing the results with you. But first things first, in order to have a successful Facebook Page you need followers! So feel free to follow my dog's new Facebook Page at Carmelo the Shih-Poo.Until next time!
