AI and Social Media Marketing

What is AI?

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence and in simple terms, it is a system that can demonstrate behaviors associated with human intelligence. Examples of such behaviors include planning, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, knowledge representation, perception, motion and manipulation, and social intelligence and creativity (Nick Health from ZD Net). You have probably used one or more AI systems in the past. These systems are used to understand what you say to Alexa and Siri. AI systems are also what Google Photos uses to recognize people in your saved images.

There are two types of AI: narrow and general. Narrow AI focuses on specific aspects or behaviors, such as interpreting video feeds from drones, organizing personal and business calendars, responding to simple customer-service queries, flagging inappropriate content online, etc. On the other hand, General AI "is the type of adaptable intellect found in humans, a flexible form of intelligence capable of learning how to carry out vastly different tasks" (Nick Health). So how does AI work for social media?

Artificial Intelligence for Social Media

AI is already a key component of social media networks. According to the Marketing Artificial Intelligence Institute, three ways AI is already incorporated into common social media platforms are as follows:
  • Facebook - AI Machine Learning is used to do everything from serving content to recognizing users' faces in photos to target users with advertising.
  • LinkedIn - AI offers job recommendations, suggests people users might like to connect with, and serves specific posts in user's feed.
  • Snapchat - AI allows tracking of features and overlay filters that move with the user's face in real-time.
Nonetheless, the uses of AI for social media extend far beyond helping platforms locate your face in photos and get your location for geo-filters. AI can also help social media marketers. Social media scheduling and monitoring use AI technologies (Read more on Social Media Managers here), but AI can go further.
